Using Your Video E-Book
The cast-ons course is crashing (the app closes) when I try to watch it on my iPad.
The first step to correcting this problem is to make sure you are watching the course with the iPad theme ON.
You will know if the iPad theme is on if you navigate to a recent blog post like http://knitfreedom.com/troubleshooting/fix-dropped-cast-on-stitch and turn your iPad sideways to landscape mode. You should see a red menu along the side of the screen. If you DON’T see that, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the homepage and click “Switch To iPad Version.”
Then navigate to the Cast-Ons class page and it should work without crashing.
If you turned on the iPad version but the app is still crashing, please contact me and let me know. I need to keep track of who this is happening to. Then, try the troubleshooting steps below. Check to see if each step solves the problem before trying the next one.
1. If you have Gmail, try opening the class by clicking the link in the thank-you email in the free Gmail app (instead of the Apple Mail app). I know this is a little clunky, so if you prefer (or if it doesn’t work), try the steps below.
2. Do a hard restart on your iPad: Hold the home and power buttons down at the same time until your screen goes black and the Apple logo appears. Your iPad is restarting.
3. Reset the Safari app: Start at the home screen. Double-click the home button to pull up a row of app icons along the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold the Safari icon until the icons start to wiggle. Tap the minus sign on the app, then click the home button to stop the app icons from wiggling.
4. Clear the cookies on your iPad: Go to the Settings app and scroll down to find Safari in the left-side menu. Tap Safari and then tap “Clear Cookies and Data.”
5. Reset your network settings: In your Settings app, click “Wi-Fi.” Look for your wi-fi network name. Tap the BLUE ARROW to the right of that name. Then tap “Forget this Network,” and then click “Forget” when the little alert box appears. Then click the left-arrow to return to “Wi-Fi,” select your network name, and enter the password to connect to the Internet again.
6. Call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and tell them what is going on. You can give them the class page and password. Tell them that the page has been tested on iPad 2 and 3 running the latest version of iOS (6.1.3) and is has worked fine. Tell them what you’ve already done and then have them walk you through steps to reset your iPad.
7. If that still doesn’t work, know that we are developing an app to make everything work all the time, and you’ll get an email as soon as it’s ready. Your previous purchases will all be there in the new app for you.
My e-book’s not working — the videos won’t play.
This video covers getting the videos to play in your ebook.
Download the latest version of Adobe Reader (you need at least version 9.4). You may need to uninstall and reinstall Adobe Reader if it’s still being stubborn – some people with brand-new iMacs using Adobe Reader X have had to uninstall and reinstall the reader.
If you’re on a Mac, be sure to right click the PDF file and select “Open With…” and select “Adobe Reader.” The default PDF reader on a Mac (called “Preview”) won’t play the videos.
If you have ANY trouble viewing the videos on your computer, remember that each e-book includes an online version of the course. I have emailed you the link and the password for the course, so you can search your email, OR: open your PDF – on the second page will be the link and the password to the online class. Bookmark the link, and you’re good to go!
What’s the password for the online version of my e-book?
I have emailed you the link and the password for the course, so you can search your email, OR: open your PDF – on the second page (called “Easy Viewing Instructions“) will be the link and the password to the online class. Navigate to the link, enter the password, and you’re good to go!
How do I view the e-books on my mobile device?
Each video e-book includes an online version that is viewable from your Internet browser as well as ANY mobile device that can access the Internet. I have emailed you the link and the password for the course, so you can search your email, OR: open your PDF – on the second page will be the link and the password to the online class. Navigate to the link, enter the password, and you’re good to go!
I suggest you add it as a bookmark to your home screen – then you’ll have the knitting class as an app!
If you can’t find the link or the password, please contact me and I’ll be glad to email it to you again.
How do I get the iBooks version to work on my iPad?
If your ebook has an iBooks version available (right now the Fair-Isle e-book is available as an iBook), here is a video showing how to download it and get it onto your iPad so that you can enjoy it.
I’d like to view the PDF on multiple computers
Sure! You can download the PDF onto multiple computers from the email you received when you made the purchase. You can also email it to yourself. The easiest was to view the class is to go to the online version, which is accessible from anywhere.
I found a typo or an incorrect video in my e-book
Whoops! Please contact me and tell me about it! I’ll fix it and send out an updated version. Thanks!
Can I watch the e-books on my Kindle, Nook, Blu-Ray player, iPad, Android… etc?
Yes! Some of them, that is.
With each new video e-book that I create, I learn new ways to make the videos available on more devices. For instance, the Complete Video Guide To Fair-Isle Knitting, which was published in April of 2012, has versions that can be watched without an Internet connection on your home computer, iPad, iPhone, Android phone, Nook Color, Kindle Fire, Android Galaxy, and Blu-Ray player, and possibly many other smartphones and tablets that you may have.
Details about what devices you can watch the videos on are included in the page that describes the e-book before you buy. If you have questions, you can also always ask me.
Questions About Buying E-Books
I’d like to buy an ebook — how do I do it?
Wonderful! Please browse my Video E-Books to see what you’d like to learn next. When you’re ready, click “Add to Cart” – you’ll be able to check out through PayPal using a credit card, checking account, or PayPal balance.
What is a “full-video version” of an e-book, and does the e-book I want come with one?
I am working on making all the KNITFreedom e-books available for offline viewing on any device – that is, you have the actual videos on your computer, iPad, Android, whatever – you don’t need to be connected to the Internet to view them.
Right now, full-video PDFs (available for viewing on your home computer or laptop only) are available and come free with the following e-books:
To access the full-video versions of the above e-books, just go to the second page of the PDF, called Easy Viewing Instructions. There you will find a link and a password to download the full PDF. The PDF files are usually between 1 and 2 GB in size, because they contain the complete video files. The download service supports resumable downloads, so your experience should quite easy.
In the near future, full-video solutions for both home and mobile viewing for ALL the e-books will be available. If you are on our mailing list, I’ll be sure to send you an update to let you know when they are ready!
What’s included in the Knitting Superstar book? Do I get a discount if I’ve already purchased some of the chapters separately?
Thanks for your interest! The Knitting Superstar e-book is made up of nine modules, many of which are sold separately as a-la-carte options, but the book contains much more than the small e-books, and is written to take you through the modules in a certain order, and has a lot more information – all designed to guide you effortlessly towards Knitting Superstardom!
It is definitely more cost-effective to get the big Knitting Superstar book – the price of buying the individual courses adds up to more than the price of the big book, but the good thing is if you buy one of the individual chapters first and then decide to get the big book, you get the cost of the small book taken off the price of the big ebook. I’ll never make you pay twice for one of my classes!
You can use the code onebook if you’ve purchased one ebook in the past that is included in the Knitting Superstar e-book. This gets you $14 off the price of the Knitting Superstar e-book (see “using a coupon code” below if you have any questions about entering the code).
If you have purchased two books or more in the past, use twobooks or threebooks to get the right discount. The computer will know how many books you’ve bought, so no funny business! :)
I’m sorry but “Learn to Double-Knit!” and “Two-at-a-Time Mittens” do not count towards a discount on “Knitting Superstar” because they are not part of that course, as they were published afterward. However, they MAY be part of the forthcoming Knitting Superstar II, in which case you would get the prices of those books taken off the total price.
If you don’t remember how many books you’ve bought, just shoot me an email and I’ll look it up for you and give you the right discount code.
Knitting Superstar is expensive. Is there a coupon code?
Sure! When you sign up to get blog updates with the KNITFreedom newsletter, I’ll give you a coupon for 25% off that you can use on your first purchase of any ebook in the store, including Become a Knitting Superstar.
Aren’t all of your videos available on YouTube? Why should I buy an e-book?
The short answer is: No – all of the videos are NOT on YouTube. I have posted many free videos of individual techniques, but the complete classes are not available in full on YouTube.
One problem with viewing the videos YouTube is that they aren’t in order; some videos end with “join me on the next video and we’ll do XYZ” but then you can’t find it; also, the names of the videos don’t always show up when you search because, for example, you may be looking for “Dropped Stitch” and the title might be “Fixing Common Knitting Mistakes.” I’ve got over 200 videos on YouTube, so you can imagine how hard it can be to find what you need!
On the other hand, the e-books are great because not only do you have the videos embedded in the book, but you also have the written parts that you can read through. I include all the necessary patterns (which you can’t find anywhere else online), and charts, etc. It’s all in one place, in order, and all the info you could need is all compiled there.
I have done so much work composing these e-books for sale; this is how I make my living. If a student wants to access the videos for free and go search for hours through YouTube, that’s fine, but please understand that you will have incomplete information. I might say something like, “I’m doing the medium size which calls to cast on 8 stitches on each needle” but I may not say how many stitches you need to cast on for your size. And without the book, you won’t even know what your gauge should be or how to choose your size.
I recommend the resources here on the KNITFreedom website for free knitting articles and knitting videos, or the video e-books for learning a specific technique, because I feel those are the easiest ways to learn what you need to learn…and the cost of the e-book is worth having complete information and everything compact in one spot in the right order!
What are the minimum system requirements?
KNITFreedom’s video classes are available for many different types of computers, phones, e-readers, and Internet connection speeds.
You DO need a functional Internet connection to download the PDF or to log on to the online version of the class to watch the videos there.
If you’d like to watch the videos on your computer without being connected to the Internet, many e-books come with this option (we’re updating more every day) but you’ll still need the Internet to download the file initially.
To watch the videos on your computer desktop without logging on to the Internet, you’ll open your PDF using the free Adobe Reader, version 9.4 or later.
Because of how the videos are set up, other PDF readers may not play them correctly.
You can use a Mac or a PC to open the PDFs in Adobe Reader, it does not matter which type of computer you have.
Most PCs come with Adobe Reader already installed, so watching the videos would be just a double-click of the E-Book icon to open it up, plus changing a few viewing preferences to the correct settings.
That’s it! If you don’t feel comfortable opening the PDF in Reader, you can simply log on to the web address that comes in an email with your purchase, type in the password, and watch the videos on the net!
You can also watch the classes on any e-reader, Kindle, Android device, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch that can has an Internet browser.
You can also watch this video demonstrating what it’s like to set up Adobe Reader for viewing the e-books.
A note for Linux users: Some users have reported difficulty seeing the videos in their PDFs when using Linux. Have no fear! You can always watch the online versions of the classes that I created just in case you have difficulties.
Do I “own” these tutorials? What if the video service goes away? How long do I have the ebook?
KNITFreedom video e-books use YouTube to host the videos. That way you can play them instantly without having to download large files. The PDFs will always work, unless something happens to YouTube.
In addition, with every e-book that has a full-video version you’ll be able to download the full video PDF file, which means you’ll own all the videos. If you lose the file, you can always re-download it using the same link, or contact me and I’ll send you the link.
Also, the courses are all available online, so no matter where you are, you’ll be able to access them anytime.
Can I give one of your e-books as a gift?
That is a lovely idea! You can send one of my e-books as a gift using Ravelry (click here to access my store on Ravelry) – Browse the store and click on the pattern that you’d like to send. Look for the “send as gift” icon in the right-hand corner.
Click the icon, and you should be good to go! Thank you so much for thinking of my e-book as a present for your friends!
Are your e-books available as DVDs?
No, after extensive market research I have decided that making DVDs would not be of interest to the majority of KNITFreedom students (I discovered this after polling about 6,000 readers). Instead, what I came up with is full-video versions of my PDFs – PDFs that you can watch offline, and video options for offline viewing on iPads, Androids, and iPhones, etc.
I did not receive my class information after making a purchase through PayPal.
Double check the e-mail address on your PayPal account. That is where your e-book will be delivered (until the magical new KNITFreedom site is up and running.)
Shopping Cart and Discount Code Issues
What’s up with the new shopping cart?
The new shopping cart may not look familiar to you – I had to switch from using Ravelry’s shopping cart to using a cart of my own. The checkout process is still the same – you can checkout through PayPal with or without an account, your checkout is secure, and secure links to download your PDFs will be sent to your email after your purchase.
How do I enter my discount code?
If you have a discount code, you’ll need to enter it in your shopping cart before you checkout through PayPal.
If you are checking out through Ravelry, be sure to click “add to cart” and not “buy now,” as the “buy now” option takes you straight to PayPal without giving you the chance to enter your coupon code.
What’s the subscriber discount coupon code?
New subscribers to the KNITFreedom Video Newsletter get a 25% off coupon to use on their first purchase. If you’d like to sign up, enter your first name and email here – if you’re already signed up, the computer will know, and will take you straight to the page with the coupon code.
I wasn’t able to enter my coupon code for some reason. Can I get a refund for the discount amount?
Sure! Sorry for the trouble. Please shoot me an email and I’ll refund you the amount of the discount right away.
When I try to send an e-book as a gift, it won’t let me enter the coupon code.
I’m so sorry! The shopping cart system doesn’t allow for this yet, but I have a way around it. As soon as you purchase the gift e-book, shoot me an email and I’ll refund you the amount of the discount right away.
How do I adjust the quantities in my cart?
If you need to change the number of e-books in your shopping cart, highlight the quantity and type in the number that you want, and hit “save quantities” before you hit “checkout now.”
Questions About Upcoming Classes/E-Books
What e-books are you working on for the future?
Thanks for asking! While I wish I could write 10 e-books at once, I am only human, and so some of the most-requested e-books are on a short waiting list. Here’s a list of upcoming classes – please visit the page and VOTE for the ones you want first! Newsletter subscribers, of course, will be the first to know and to get special discount codes when any new books are ready.
What is “Knitting Superstar II” and when will it be published?
“Knitting Superstar II” is going to be an “advanced” Knitting Superstar-style super-course – ALL the advanced techniques, with ALL the tricks to perfect them. Fair-isle, entrelac, brioche, moebius knitting, basic and custom sweaters… I can hardly wait! But I will have to, and so will you… Just know that I am working as hard as I can to get it written and filmed! I hope to publish “Knitting Superstar II” in 2012, and I’ll do my best to make it happen. Newsletter subscribers, of course, will be the first to know and to get a special discount code when the e-book is ready.
File Recovery, Sharing Permissions, Refunds and Exchanges
I lost/can’t find my copy of the e-book, how can I recover it?
Worry not! You have a few options. First, you can go to the online version of the e-book if you lose the PDF. Also, if you bought the e-book through Ravelry, the PDF will be saved in the “PDF” section in your Ravelry Library.
How do I find the e-book in my Ravelry library?
Your Library can be accessed from the main page from Ravelry after you sign in, by hovering with your mouse over the “my notebook” button or, if you click “my notebook,” the menu at left will appear in the sidebar. Clicking “library” will show you any books you’ve added. Click the “PDF” files tab at top right to see any PDFs you’ve saved. If you just downloaded the PDF and you can’t find it, try searching your computer, or looking in your “Downloads” folder. If your files got deleted, or you just want another copy of the PDF, please contact me and I’ll email you a new one!
Why aren’t my PDFs getting saved in Ravelry?
Because I switched to a new shopping cart software, it is not affiliated with Ravelry any more, and therefore can’t save the purchased PDFs to your library. If this is a serious issue for you, send me an email and I’ll send you the PDF on Ravelry so you can have it in your library. :)
Can I upload my own PDFs to my Ravelry library?
At this time, Ravelry does not have the ability to store PDFs that were not purchased through Ravelry. However, it is a current suggestion, so if you would like to have this feature, read more about the status of it here, and click the checkmarks to vote for this option, and/or to be notified when it is available.
Can I share these e-books at all? I’d like to show them to a friend or my knitting students
Sure! I’m excited you want to show your friends! Just please don’t give away the online password or make copies of the PDF to distribute.
The PDFs are copyrighted, and distributing them without my express written permission is against the law. While you are with your friends or knitting group, feel free to pull up the PDF or the online class to work along with the videos!
The PDFs may not be used to teach a knitting class where students pay a fee to watch the videos. Just have each of the students invest in their own copy and show the instructor the receipt, please.
I’m not completely happy with my e-book and would like a refund or an exchange.
The KNITFreedom guarantee is that you will love the e-book or you get your money back. If you have trouble playing the videos, however, please let me help you get the videos working before you ask for a refund!
If you do not love the e-book, please contact me and I’ll give you an exchange or refund your purchase right away.
Video Newsletter Subscription, Free Patterns and Downloads
I saw your pattern for free on Ravelry. How do I get it?
All KNITFreedom patterns that are listed for free on Ravelry are available through the KNITFreedom Free Patterns page.
Where’s the errata for KNITFreedom patterns?
I’m working on adding errata pages for all the patterns – you can find them by hovering your mouse over the HELP! tab in the menu bar above, or right here: Pattern Errata. As I edit and fix up the patterns you’ll also find a link to the errata pages in your pattern PDFs.
I never received my confirmation email.
Sorry! Can you please check your spam folder? You can also try adding “[email protected]” to your address book – this will prevent the confirmation email from going to spam. Then try signing up again. You can also try signing up again using a different email address.
I can’t view the videos/click the links in the emails.
Some newsletter subscribers have had trouble seeing the links I send in the emails. The first thing to try is to click “display images.” Sometimes, if your inbox is VERY full, the email service will take out links to reduce space.
If you’d like to work with me to see if we can fix this, please contact me with the TITLE of the newsletter where you first started seeing a problem, as well as which email service you are using.
I can’t see the form to fill out to sign up.
I’d like to change the email address where I receive my newsletter.
To change the email address where you receive your newsletter, just email me with the old email address and the new one and let me know you’d like me to change it.
Sometimes, if I can’t find your email address in our system, it’s because you’ve been subscribed to blog updates through Feedburner. That’s when newly published blog posts get sent automatically to your email (this is different than the exclusive content that is sent to KNITFreedom Video Newsletter subscribers). To re-subscribe to blog updates, go to http://feedmyinbox.com and type in http://knitfreedom.com/feed.
The emails I get are wider than my screen and I have to scroll.
If you have to scroll back and forth to see the entire e-mail from KNITFreedom, try clicking on “Display Images,” “Display All Images,” or “Always Display Images from Sender” at the top of your e-mail screen.
When the images are displayed, the e-mail should then fit itself to the size of your screen.
Knitting Questions, Video Requests, and Feedback
I have a question about my knitting, or how to do a certain technique.
I answer all knitting questions posted in the KNITFreedom forum on Ravelry on a daily basis. Not only does this help other members of the community, I get some help too, because other members help answer the questions. I’m sorry, but I do not answer knitting questions sent to my email or to me via the contact form on this site. The KNITFreedom group moderators and I will answer all your questions ASAP in the forum!
I have an idea for a KNITFreedom video I’d like to see.
Lovely! I LOVE ideas for videos – I publish so many that I always need ideas for more! Please post your suggestion in the Video Suggestions thread in the KNITFreedom Forum on Ravelry. Thank you for your suggestions! Line Break
I have some constructive feedback about your site or your videos.
That is fantastic! I always want to make my videos better and easier to use. Please post any constructive feedback you have in the Constructive Feedback thread in the KNITFreedom Forum on Ravelry. Thank you for your honest feedback! Line Break
I am very happy with my e-book and I want to tell you about it!
Hooray!! The most helpful thing you can do is post a tiny testimonial about your experience in the Comments section of whatever e-book you liked.
An easy way to find this is to visit the KNITFreedom Store on Ravelry – browse for the e-book you liked, click “Comments” along the top tab, and click to leave a comment. Not only does this make me feel SO happy, it also lets other people know that you had a good experience and you learned a lot! It may be just the encouragement that some adventurous beginner needs to take the plunge and try a video e-book.
Alert the Webmaster
I found a broken link on your site.
Omg! Thank you! Please contact me and let me know and I’ll fix it right away.
I’d like to share your videos on my site or tell my readers about KNITFreedom.
I am delighted and flattered that you’d like to share my site with your readers! You may absolutely embed my YouTube videos on your site – just please include one of the following sentences below the video:
- Visit KNITFreedom.com for more great knitting videos
- KNITFreedom.com specializes in making you a Knitting Superstar!
- Become a Knitting Superstar with the best Magic Loop videos on the Internet!
If you’d just like to tell your readers about the site, adding in links to KNITFreedom helps me a LOT! This only works if you highlight appropriate text and put in the KNITFreedom link, like this: Magic Loop videos.
This helps Google understand that KNITFreedom is a great place to learn this topic. If you feel like helping me out with this, here are some links you can use:
The KEY to this is highlighting the right text – things that people might search for when looking for a topic that KNITFreedom specializes in. This would look like this: Liat has a bunch of great free knitting videos on KNITFreedom. She helps you fix knitting mistakes and teaches you how to improve your knitting. She’s got free Magic Loop videos and free knitting patterns if you want to learn magic loop or toe-up socks.
Obviously this is complete overkill, but just to give you the idea. There is no need to put in this many links – one is fine.
Thank you for your support! If you contact me and let me know that you linked to me, I’ll list your site on my Partners page! Line Break
I’d like to promote your e-books on my blog or site. Do you have an affiliate program?
Woohoo! That’s fantastic! If you would like to work together with me to promote my ebooks, I have an affiliate program and can split the sales with you. My “Become a Knitting Superstar” e-book is on Clickbank.com, so if you signed up, you can use a special hoplink to send people to the sales page from your site and then they send you checks.
I have a lot of resources you could use on your site, too, if you want – check out my Affiliate Resources page – I wrote blog posts you can use, there are sample reviews, and 7 different banners in different sizes to choose from. I also recommend that you sign up for my affiliate list here – then you’ll get updates when I add more resources (for instance, when I buy new banner designs). That will help us both!
If you don’t want to mess with Clickbank and just want to promote the book, you can still use the Affiliate Resources page, like the knitting articles and banners – whatever you want. Feel free to post the articles on your website – I also have more at EzineArticles.com that you could use to add helpful content if you like.
The thing that drives the MOST traffic to my site (and that brings you the most sales) is a review. I would LOVE for you to review the e-book (let me know and I’ll send you a copy of it) for your site – we could even do a giveaway or an interview or something if you want.
Not only does it create something cool for your readers to read, but the people that visit the link are already curious or interested, and they are much more likely to buy the product. Here’s a sample review of “Knitting Superstar!” (it’s usually good to have at least one tiny negative in the review so it’s more believable and less biased).
I’m really proud of the e-book and think it’s an absolutely revolutionary way to make people into Knitting Superstars, and I would LOVE LOVE to share it with your audience.
Thank you for asking – I look forward to being part of your site!
